Prepare Your Home for an Electrical Renovation
An electrical renovation—whether you’re gutting a kitchen, adding an extension, or simply retrofitting smart lighting—requires careful integration with builders, plumbers, and your daily life. An ad-hoc approach often leads to misplaced power points, inadequate lighting, and costly wall patching later on.
Before the hammer swings, use this checklist to ensure your electrical renovation stays on track, compliant, and perfectly suited to your needs.
1. Finalise the Blueprints First
Electricians need to know exactly where your cabinetry, appliances, and furniture will sit. A power point installed based on a guess will inevitably end up hidden behind a fridge or in the middle of a blank wall. Finalise your kitchen layout, bedroom logic, and living room media centres before the electrician arrives for the "rough-in" phase.
2. Assess Your Current Switchboard
If you are adding an induction cooktop, an electric oven, or split-system air conditioning, your old switchboard likely cannot handle the new load. Factoring in a switchboard upgrade and mains supply check early in the budget prevents nasty surprises when the appliances are finally plugged in.
3. Don't Forget Data and Smart Tech
Wireless networks are convenient, but nothing beats hardwired data for TVs, home offices, and gaming consoles. Plan for CAT6 networking points alongside standard power outlets. Additionally, if you plan to integrate smart lighting or motorised blinds, specific cabling needs to be run before the plasterboard goes up.
4. Think About Feature Lighting Early
Pendant lights over a kitchen island or LED strip lighting beneath cabinets require specific wiring and driver placements. If you decide you want pendant lights *after* the ceiling is finished, it involves cutting holes and patching paint. Walk through the space with your electrician and flag every location that requires specific, accented illumination.
